Lydney is a town and civil parish in Gloucestershire, England. It is on the west bank of the River Severn in the Forest of Dean District, and is 16 miles southwest of Gloucester. The town began as the parish of Lydney encompassing the adjoining villages called Newerne, the village of Aylburton, and scattered farmsteads in the tithings of Purton, Nass, and Allaston. It is suggested that the area housed settlements as early as the Iron Age a promontory fort was established at Lydney Park and later used for iron ore mining.
