An area centred on an old village in Greater London and part of the London Borough of Hillingdon, Ickenham is an area appearing in the Domesday Book - with buildings from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries still standing.

A military station was opened in the area in 1917, the RAF West Ruislip station - with it running in service until 2006, its last use as a Navy Exchange.

A garden commemorating the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II was opened in September 2012 in Swakeleys Park, featuring a beautifully landscaped area around a stone obelisk. Unfortunately the opening of the garden was delayed due to the destruction of the stone obelisk shortly after it had been installed. Thankfully, it was restored and the garden remains open.
